Preparing for English Tests

EPrT (English Proficiency Test)

EPrT (English Proficiency Test) is a tool to measure English proficiency covering three competences namely Listening Competence consisting of 50 questions, Grammar Competence consisting of 40 questions, & Reading Competence consisting of 50 questions. The test takes about 2 hours to complete. EPrT Score ranges from 310 to 677 and the certificate is valid for two years.

Listing Competence

In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show your ability to comprehend dialogues and talks, such as lectures in English. There are three parts in this section. The explanation will be heard before each part starts. Do not take any notes in your test book or answer sheet.

In this part, you will listen to short dialogues between two people. Then, after each dialogue, you will listen to a question based on the dialogue. You will only hear the dialogues and the questions one time.

In this part, you will listen to longer dialogues between two people. Then, after each dialogue, you will listen to several questions based on the dialogue. You will only hear the dialogues and the questions one time.

In this part, you will listen to examples of lectures. After each lecture, you will listen to several questions based on the lecture that you have just heard. You will only hear the lectures and the questions one time.

On the cassette you hear:

Paul     : “I can’t stand living with my roommate anymore. Are you saying I should move into

a new apartment?

Stella   : “Maybe you should ask your roommate to move into another apartment.”

Paul     : “On second thoughts, you know what? I’ll just do that.”

What will the man probably do?

In your test book, you read:

  1. He will move into a new apartment.
  2. He will not move from his apartment.
  3. He will ask his roommate to stay in his apartment.
  4. He will ask his roommate to find an apartment for him.

You notice from the dialogue that the best answer to the question “What will the man probably do?” is B – He will not move from his apartment. Thus, the right answer is B.

Grammar Competence

In this part, your ability to recognize appropriate and standard written English language will be measured. There are two types of questions. In the first type, you are going to choose the best words or phrases to complete the sentences. In the second type, you are going to identify one underlined word or phrase that must be changed so that the sentences are correct.

Example I:

In your test book, you read:

Foreign students should not work _________ they have permission to.

  1. after
  2. unless
  3. and
  4. because

The best answer for the above question is B.

Therefore, on the answer sheet, cross out letter B.

Example II:

In your test book, you read:

Hurricanes are great windstorms that can to measure up to hundreds of miles across
A B C D

The wrong phrase in the above statement is C.

Therefore, on the answer sheet, cross out letter C.

Reading Competence

In this part, you will read several passages. There are several questions about the passage.

In simple terms, a monitor operates very similarly to how your regular television set works. The principle is based upon the use of an electronic screen called a cathode ray tube or CRT, which is the major and most expensive part of a monitor. The CRT is lined with a phosphorous material that glows when it is struck by a stream of electrons. This material is arranged into an array of millions of tiny cells, usually called dots. If you look up close at your monitor or use a magnifying glass you can see these dots.

The following statements are true, except:

  1. A monitor has exactly the same shape with a television.
  2. The process happened inside a monitor is identical with that happened inside a television.
  3. Both monitor and television have similar principle of operation.
  4. CRT is the most important part of a monitor.

The answer to the question is A. In the text, it is stated that “monitor operates very similarly to how your regular television set works”. This means that the similarity between a monitor and a television set is in their operation system, not in terms of their shape. That is why option A is false. The operation system refers to what happened inside a monitor or television; phrase used in option B. Option C is true based on the information in the 2nd sentence. Option C is right as in 2nd sentence it is informed that CRT is the major part of a monitor. The word “major” may lead to the conclusion that CRT is important.
